Description of Clinical Program
The Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center has become internationally recognized for its contributions to the understanding of heart failure and the advancement of therapy to improve and prolong life. Comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services are available to patients with all degrees of cardiomyopathy, ranging from silent ventricular enlargement to advanced congestive heart failure.

For patients suffering from progressive heart failure, a specialized program of Tailored Therapy is designed to optimize each patient's heart function. Many of the most severely ill patients treated at the Center have been able to go home and begin a regular exercise program after undergoing therapy at UCLA. The re-hospitalization rate in these patients is reduced by 85 percent. Of the patients accepted for cardiac transplantation, 30 percent improve their functional status to the point that transplantation can be deferred in favor of sustained medical therapy.
