Description of Clinical Program
The UCLA Ventricular Assist Device Program provides specialized circulation and oxygenation support to pediatric and adult patients in advanced cardiac failure. State-of-the-art assist devices currently available at UCLA include the intraaortic balloon pump (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Bio-Medicus ventricular assist device (VAD), Novacor, and most recently, the HeartMate.
UCLA's team of highly trained perfusionists are adept at providing mechanical assistance to patients who are unresponsive to conventional medical and surgical therapies or who experience difficulty following cardiopulmonary bypass support. Additionally, patients whose systems deteriorate while awaiting a suitable donor, also benefit from a circulatory support device; the survival rate for bridge-to-transplant patients at UCLA is 90 percent.
