General Surgery Training Program

Joe Hines, MD, FACS
Director, General Surgery
Residency Program

Welcome to the General Surgery Training Program website. The aim of our program is to train outstanding clinical surgeons, dedicated educators and researcher scientists, and the future leaders of academic surgery. Candidates for categorical positions are in the top 10% to 15% of medical school graduates, and demonstrate imagination, creativity, and interest in research that will enable them to contribute to surgical science. The program provides accelerated training with steadily increasing responsibilities and culminates in the final year of chief residency.

The General Surgery Residency has been designed around several basic principles: early operating room experience, exposure with varied patient populations, teaching opportunities, and a stimulating research environment. By the end of clinical training, the resident will have performed a wide variety of general surgical procedures, including complex gastrointestinal, vascular, oncologic, head and neck, laparoscopic, endocrine, pediatric, and general thoracic procedures. At the completion of the chief year, each resident will be an experienced surgeon capable of managing diverse general and specialty surgical problems.

Our program is designed around the six core competencies established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. These six areas serve as the central framework for training and evaluation of our residents.

  1. Patient Care
  2. Medical Knowledge
  3. Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
  4. Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  5. Professionalism
  6. System-Based Practice

The residency program is based in Westwood at the UCLA Medical Center and residents rotate through the Santa Monica-UCLA Hospital, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hosptial, and Kaiser Foundation Hospital (Panorama City).
