General Surgery Training Program: Surgical Training

The two year Core Surgical Program consists of four week rotations in general surgery and surgical specialty services. General surgery rotations include trauma, vascular surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, pediatric surgery, liver transplantation, and surgical oncology. Additional months are spent on specialty rotations such as orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology, cardiothoracic surgery, head and neck surgery, and plastic surgery. This year we have introduced a dedicated outpatient rotation in the UCLA Surgery Center. Each resident also receives one 28-day block of vacation per year in the first year and 2 two-week blocks in the second year.

Research is emphasized in UCLA's residency program. This emphasis originates from the conviction that intensive training in research not only sharpens the intellect and creativity of young surgeons, but also prepares them to better deal with complex clinical problems for which there is often no textbook solution. Moreover, each trainee has the responsibility of adding new knowledge to the foundations of surgical science. The Department of Surgery is consistently ranked in the top ten in the country in NIH funding for research, and academic faculty members are involved in a broad range of research activity. The Faculty includes individuals with diverse clinical interests and expertise, including nationally (and internationally) renowned researchers performing basic, clinical, and health services/outcomes research. The residency is designed for men and women who aspire to become tomorrow's leading surgeons, and who recognize their responsibilities in teaching and advancing knowledge.

Residents also have the opportunity to participate in the Subspecialty Training and Advanced Research (STAR) Program. This three year research training is vigorous and broad, and leads to an advanced degree in basic laboratory research (PhD), health services research, or clinical investigation. For those interested in clinical investigation, the STAR Program offers the opportunity to obtain a special Master of Science in Clinical Research degree. The extended training period gives STAR awardees protected time with full salary support in a scientifically diverse and nurturing environment.

Following the research years, the resident returns to the third clinical year as an assistant resident, progresses through the fourth clinical year as a senior resident, and finally attains the rank of chief resident in the fifth clinical year. The residents rotate through a variety of rotations fulfilling all of the requirements for training. A list of clinical services is available at Clinical Services. During this period of training the resident is exposed to several skills training labs in the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT), a new robotic and technology center at UCLA, promoting the use of surgical robots and digital imaging in surgery and medicine. In addition, a rotation with the GI service exposes residents to the techniques of UCLA and the VA. The resident takes four weeks of vacation divided into one-week intervals. Upon completion of the residency, graduates have received extensive training in the principles and practice of General Surgery and are prepared to embark on the next phase of their career.
