General Surgery Training Program: Teaching Conferences

In 2004, we began planning the reorganization of the formal education program. Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Hiatt, we have established a three-hour block of protected time each Wednesday morning, during which the residents from all sites are excused from clinical duties and are required to attend the combined conferences at UCLA. The first hour is Morbidity and Mortality conference. The second hour rotates among Grand Rounds, core curriculum and basic science lectures, all presented by senior faculty or visiting professors. The final hour is made up of simultaneous sessions tailored to resident level and includes intern conferences, case conferences, journal clubs, skills laboratories, and an ethics program. In addition to this dedicated conference schedule, each surgical service has weekly discipline-specific conferences that include representatives from our own faculty, radiology, pathology, gastroenterology and medical oncology.
