Neonatal Surgery

Description of Clinical Program
UCLA has a multidisciplinary team to provide parents with information and to provide immediate and coordinated care for babies born with conditions requiring corrective surgery. The Fetal Diagnostic Center, High Risk Obstetrical Service, and state-of-the-art Level III/IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provide care to pregnant women and their newborn babies delivered at UCLA Medical Center. Labor and delivery and post partum are in close proximity to the NICU. Prenatal counseling is routine. In addition, the NICU is a regional referral center caring for critically ill newborns or those requiring specialized surgical care brought to UCLA by a dedicated, highly-trained Neonatal Transport Team. Transfers are accepted from an area extending from San Luis Obispo to San Diego.

The pediatric surgeons at the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA have extensive experience in providing specialized surgical care to neonates. Common problems diagnosed and treated include:

Diaphragmatic hernia
